Abstract Junglerice (Echinochloa colona) is one of the most problematic weed species in rice fields in Colombia. Herbicides inhibitors of the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS) have been widely used to control junglerice and other grass species. ALS inhibitors have the highest reports of resistance worldwide, and Colombia has recent reports of ALS resistance in E. colona. The timely and accurate detection of resistance sources is imperative for mitigating and managing herbicide resistance. However, for E. colona there are no published sequences of the ALS gene. In this research, primer design, RNA extraction, cloning, miniprep, and PCR were used to obtain the first partial sequence of the ALS gene on susceptible and resistant accessions of E. colona. The sequences did not present nucleotide differences that could be associated with target-site resistance to ALS inhibitors. RESUMEN Las malezas constituyen un factor limitante en la producción de banano en Colombia. Para contribuir a la fundamentación de su manejo, se propuso evaluar la estructura y diversidad de las comunidades de malezas en cuatro zonas productoras de banano (Alta, Media, Baja y Norte) en el departamento del Magdalena. Se realizaron levantamientos durante 2016 y 2017 mediante muestreo sistemático utilizando cuadrados de 1m2 en fincas seleccionadas en cada zona con método de control químico, cobertura y mecánico, y se calculó la frecuencia, densidad y dominancia de las malezas para estimar el índice de valor de importancia (IVI), la diversidad alfa y el índice de similitud de Bray-Curtis. Se identificaron 122 especies incluidas en 93 géneros y 39 familias. Poaceae y Cyperaceae presentaron mayor riqueza específica y Commelinaceae mayor IVI. Commelina erecta, Axonopus compressus y Melothria pendula fueron las especies de mayor importancia ecológica en las plantaciones. Los parámetros fitosociológicos difieren entre zonas y métodos de control. Las zonas con mayor y menor diversidad fueron Norte y Baja, respectivamente. Hubo mayor similitud entre las zonas Media y Baja, así como entre Media y Alta, en tanto, la Norte fue la más disímil. Pocas especies fueron muy abundantes y frecuentes, señalando la tendencia a baja diversidad. Los resultados más importantes permiten concluir que las condiciones agroecológicas de cada zona y el método de control empleado influyen en los parámetros fitosociológicos y diversidad de especies, determinando la composición y estructura de las comunidades de malezas asociadas al cultivo en el departamento del Magdalena.

ABSTRACT Weeds are a limiting factor in banana production in Colombia. To contribute to its management, we proposed to evaluate the structure and diversity of weed communities in four banana producing areas (Alta, Media, Baja, and Norte) of the Magdalena department. Surveys were carried out during 2016 and 2017 by systematic sampling using 1m2 squares, on farms with chemical, coverage, and mechanical weed control methods, selected in each area; the frequency, density and dominance of weeds were calculated to estimate the importance value index (IVI), the alpha diversity and the similarity index of Bray-Curtis. One hundred twenty-two species included in 93 genera and 39 families were identified. Poaceae and Cyperaceae presented the highest specific richness and Commelinaceae the highest IVI. Commelina erecta, Axonopus compressus and Melothria péndula were the species of greatest ecological importance in the plantations. Phytosociological parameters differ between zones and between control methods. The areas with greater and lesser diversity were Norte and Baja, respectively. There was greater similarity between Media and Baja and Media and Alta zones, while Norte was the most dissimilar. Few species were very abundant and frequent, indicating that diversity tends to be low. The agroecological conditions of each zone and the control methods used influence phytosociological parameters and species diversity, determining the structure and composition of weed communities associated with the crop.

ABSTRACT The prevalence and deficient control with glyphosate in some weeds in banana (Musa × paradisiaca L.) plantations in the Department of Magdalena, Colombia, have been evidenced. The susceptibility to glyphosate of prevalent weeds in farms with more than 10 yr of application of this herbicide was evaluated. Seeds and propagules of adult plants of five weedy species were collected from farms where deficient glyphosate control was observed (populations with possible resistance) and in areas not cultivated or free of herbicide use (susceptible populations). Under controlled conditions, seedlings obtained from 17 populations were treated with a commercial dose of glyphosate (1440 g acid equivalent [ae] ha-1) or twice this dose (2880 g ae ha-1). At 21 d after application, populations with a relative fresh weight and survival greater than 20% and visual control lower than 80% were categorized as resistant populations. To determine the resistance factor (RF) in the resistant populations, bioassays were performed with increasing doses of the herbicide (0, 720, 1440, 2880, 5760, and 11 520 g ae ha-1). Populations of Echinochloa colona (L.) Link and Melothria pendula L. were sensitive to both doses, while the populations of Commelina erecta L. and Syngonium podophyllum Schott were not controlled, confirming glyphosate-tolerant. Populations of Erigeron bonariensis L., from uncultivated areas was susceptible, while those from farms were resistant. Glyphosate-resistance was confirmed in two populations of E. bonariensis, with respective RF of 3.5 and 8.6. The repetitive application of glyphosate for weed control in the Magdalena banana farms has contributed to the prevalence of tolerant species and the appearance of herbicide-resistant weeds.

ABSTRACT Reproductive traits and natural mortality rate of cardinalfish females (Epigonus crassicaudus) were studied from samples collected onboard commercial fishing vessels, from 2012 to 2015, on the Chilean coast. The reproductive cycles of females analyzed thought gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed a maximum reproductive activity in austral fall, between March and May. Length (L50%) and age (A50%) at maturity, estimated using a macroscopic scale of the developed ovary, was 22.3 cm fork length (FL) and 9.3 years, respectively. Natural mortality (M) was estimated by two age-related methods. Using maximum age (tmax) M was estimated in 0.063 yr-1 and through age-at-maturity (A50%) in 0.15 yr-1. A potential bias in the reproductive study is discussed when a macroscopic maturity scale is used. Nevertheless, its usefulness is validated when funding is scarce, and time is limited. Although M uncertainty was not evaluated, the estimated range appears to be into the expected values to long-lived species. The life history parameters estimated in the present study can be used to evaluate possible time variability in maturity and M rates. Also, these results could be used in stock assessment analysis and to apply effective management measures in the fishery.

ABSTRACT Echinochloa colona (L.) Link is one of the most troublesome weed species in rice (Oryza sativa L.) crops. Despite numerous cases of herbicide resistance in E. colona worldwide, in Colombia the reports are scarce and most of them dating from over two decades ago. To screen the resistance of E. colona to bispyribac-sodium, cyhalofop-butyl and quinclorac, in the Saldaña and Purificación counties, a survey was carried out in 23 rice fields, through a grid of 26 squares of 2.56 km2 each. Seedlings from 23 populations were treated with commercial formulations from these respective herbicides at their recommended (1x) dose and twice the dose (2x) under controlled conditions. Relative fresh weight and percent control were evaluated. Populations with relative fresh weight greater than 20% and control below 80%, were categorized as resistant. For statistical analysis, a mixed model was used with populations as a random effect. The distribution of resistance was evaluated by a spatial autocorrelation analysis. It was established that 91% of populations were resistant to bispyribac-sodium, 48% to cyhalofop-butyl and 43% to quinclorac. Sixty-five percent had multiple resistance to two herbicides and 22% to three herbicides. Resistance was randomly distributed, according to the results obtained from the mixed model that showed a homogeneous response of populations within fields and heterogeneous among fields. This indicates that management strategies at field level generate a local selection pressure that determines the evolution of the resistance independently in each field.

Los estudios de dinámica de poblaciones se basan en el conocimiento y registro de cambios en las comunidades de malezas en respuesta a efectos de disturbio propios del manejo del cultivo. En el trabajo se evaluó la dinámica de poblaciones de malezas del cultivo de arroz en el departamento del Tolima, Colombia, por efecto de aplicaciones con herbicidas post-emergentes. Se muestreó el 0,1% del área sembrada, demarcando un área de 1 ha en cada lote comercial. Los muestreos se realizaron antes y después de las aplicaciones post-emergentes. Las variables evaluadas fueron frecuencia, densidad y cobertura y los datos se analizaron mediante el índice de valor de importancia (IVI). Los resultados muestran que Echinochloa colona fue la maleza más importante en todas las zonas evaluadas, antes y después de las aplicaciones herbicidas post-emergentes. Igualmente sobresalieron especies como, Digitaria ciliaris, Cyperus iria e Ischaemum rugosum. La frecuencia relativa fue la variable estimada más influyente en la determinación de la importancia de las especies. Las aplicaciones de herbicidas generaron cambios en la estructura de la comunidad en las zonas evaluadas y en cada evaluación.

Studies on weed population dynamics are based on observing and recording changes in weed communities in response to effects of disturbances in crop management. The present study aimed to evaluate weed population dynamics in rice crops in Tolima, Colombia, resulting from post-emergent herbicide applications. Sampling was carried out in 0.1% of the cultivated area, marking out a 1 ha area in each commercial lot. Samples were taken before and after post-emergent applications. Evaluated variables were frequency, density, and cover. The data were analyzed using the Importance Value Index (IVI). Results demonstrated that Echinochloa colona was the most important weed of all of the evaluated zones, before and after post-emergent herbicide applications. Other notable species included Digitaria ciliaris, Cyperus iria and Ischaemum rugosum. Relative frequency variable was the most influential on the importance index of the species. Furthermore, herbicide applications generated changes in the community structure in the evaluated zones and in each evaluation.

La pérdida de selectividad de los herbicidas es un riesgo permanente y relevante en cultivos de alto valor; motivo por el cual es importante contar con alternativas que permitan mitigar su efecto en la fisiología del estrés en estos cultivos. Se llevó a cabo un experimento en invernadero y otro en condiciones de campo, evaluando el comportamiento de ácidos hidroxicarboxílicos, como biorreguladores orgánicos en plantas de tomate tratadas con aplicación foliar de Metsulfuron-metil y Metribuzina a dosis comercial y sobredosis. En la etapa de invernadero, se evaluó la eficiencia cuántica, contenido de clorofilas, conductancia estomática e intercambio de CO2; en campo, se caracterizó el desarrollo foliar, crecimiento de raíces, tasa de asimilación neta (TAN), tasa relativa de crecimiento (TRC) y rendimiento del cultivo bajo un sistema de producción convencional. La aplicación de Metsulfuron-metil (comercial y sobredosis) no alteró significativamente el contenido de clorofilas ni la conductancia estomática; sin embargo, disminuyó en 80% y 100% la eficiencia cuántica e intercambio de CO2 respectivamente, lo cual fue mitigado por la aplicación del biorregulador. Los ácidos hidroxicarboxílicos también evitaron la disminución del crecimiento de raíces y recuperaron la TAN y TRC durante el primer mes de evaluación, propiciando mayor llenado de fruto. Metribuzina afectó significativamente el intercambio de CO2 durante los primeros 15 días después de aplicación de los tratamientos (dda); la aplicación en sobredosis afectó la eficiencia cuántica a partir de 7 dda y causó defoliación a partir de 30 dda, lo que estuvo ligado con un descenso del 20% en producción. Los biorreguladores disminuyeron el estrés causado por sobredosis de Metribuzina y con el uso se alcanzaron valores similares a las plantas testigo en todas las variables analizadas.

Losing herbicide selectivity is a permanent risk in high-value crops, which is why it is important to have alternatives that mitigate the effect on the physiology of stressed crops. A greenhouse and a field experiment were performed to evaluate the behavior of hidroxy-carboxylic acids (HCA) as an organic bio-regulator in tomato plants that were treated with Metsulfuron-Metil and Metribuzine at regular and excessive doses. In the greenhouse experiment, the quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance and CO2 exchange were evaluated; in the field experiment, we evaluated the foliar area, root growth, net assimilation rate (NAR), relative growth rate (RGR) and yield. Statistically, the Metsulfuron-metil (regular and excessive rates) did not affect the chlorophyll content, but it decreased the quantum efficiency and CO2 exchange in 80% and 100% of the plants, which was alleviated by the bio-regulator application. During the first month after the application, the hidroxy-carboxylic acids did not have the decreased root growth that was seen after the Metsulfuron application, and aided in the recovery of the NAR and RGR, resulting in a better fruit set. The Metribuzine affected the CO2 exchange significantly during 15 days after the application (daa) of treatments whereas the excessive dose application impacted the quantum efficiency for 7 daa and was responsible for leaf fall at 30 daa and 20% less production. All of the excessive Metribuzin dose injuries were mitigated by the bio-regulator application, reaching similar values as the control plants.

Los estudios que involucran el inventario de arvenses son conducidos frecuentemente por estudiantes o profesionales de las ciencias agropecuarias y/o ambientales con el objetivo principal de obtener información acerca del patrón de distribución, frecuencia, cobertura, densidad o de la biodiversidad de las especies en una región de investigación. En muchas ocasiones el único propósito consiste en identificar aquellas especies que son consideradas importantes por los productores agropecuarios ya sea porque resultan benéficas o porque compiten con el cultivo en producción. Cuando se hace el muestreo de las arvenses usando el método del cuadrado, algunas de las especies que están presentes en el sembrado de interés podrían no ser muestreadas, por lo que estarían ausentes en el inventario final. El objetivo principal de este artículo es mostrar como la cantidad de especies arvenses en la muestra observada podría ser estimada al usar estimadores Bayesianos así como también estimadores clásicos tales como el Chao 2, Jackknife de primer y segundo orden y el Bootstrap. La estimación del inventario de arvenses utilizando las propuestas Bayesiana y no-paramétrica en el caso del cultivo de crisantemo rindieron resultados similares, con 19 especies en todos los estimadores excepto en el estimador Mingoti, el cual rindió 18 especies arvenses.

Studies that involve the inventory of weeds are frequently carried out by students and professionals of the agricultural and/or environmental sciences with the principal objective of obtaining information on the distribution pattern, frequency, coverage, density or biodiversity of the species in a studied region. On many occasions, the only purpose consists of identifying those species that are considered important by farmers, perhaps because they are beneficial or because they compete with the crops in production. When the sampling of weeds is done using the quadrat method, some of the species which are present in the cultivated field of interest may not be sampled, meaning they will be absent in the final inventory. The principal objective of this article was to show how the quantity of weeds in an observed sample can be estimated Bayesian estimators, as well as non-parametric estimators, such as Chao 2, Jackknife, of the first and second order, and Bootstrap. The inventory estimation of the weeds using the Bayesian and classical proposals in the case of cultivation of chrysanthemum produced similar results, with 19 species in all of the estimators, except in the Mingoti estimators, which produced 18 weeds.

La composición florística de la comunidad de malezas fue establecida en los municipios de Granada, Lejanías y Villavicencio, en el departamento del Meta, colecta botánica a través de recorridos en los principales cultivos de frutas. Se registraron 135 especies pertenecientes a 103 géneros y 35 familias. Las dicotiledóneas presentan mayor aporte con 34 familias, 80 géneros y 102 especies. El cultivo de cítricos con 65 especies, 54 géneros y 28 familias fue el de mayor número de especies y el de menor aporte fue piña con 14 especies. La familia con mayor riqueza fue Poaceae con 18 especies, seguida de Asteraceae con 17 y Cyperaceae con 10 especies. Se incluyó información sobre tipos de hábitat y ciclo de vida de las malezas, en el cual el 85% fueron plantas herbáceas y el ciclo de vida anual también fue predominante con el 37% de las especies.

The weed community was determined in the municipalities of Granada, Lejanías and Villavicencio in the department of Meta using transects and a botanical collection in the principal fruit crops. The results showed that there were 137 species belonging to 103 genera and 35 families. The dicotyledons had the largest contribution with 4 families, 22 genera and 33 species. The citrus crop, with 65 species, 54 genera and 28 families, had the highest number of species and the lowest contribution came from the pineapple with 14 species. The Poaceae family displayed the greatest richness with 18 species, followed by Asteraceae with 17 and Cyperaceae with 10. Information on the types of habitat and life cycle of the weeds was also included, in which 85% were herbaceous plants and an annual cycle predominated in 37% of the species.

Growth parameters (L∞, K, and t0) and natural mortality of the Patagonian sprat (Sprattus fuegensis) Chiloé inland sea were estimated. This area corresponds to the northern limit of the species distribution in the South Pacific Ocean. A total of 1,584 otolith were analyzed between July 2005 and December 2006. A covariance analysis ruled out significant differences (P = 0.654) in the otolith size-fish length relationship between males and females. The otoliths showed high monthly proportion of hyaline edge type in August 2005 and from July to October 2006. The hyaline band formation from mid-winter to spring coincided with the breeding season extending from September to December. This suggests an annual periodicity of annuli formation, likely as a consequence of channeling energy into reproduction. The growth parameters were L∞= 17.71 cm; K = 0.78 yr-1; and t0 = -0.46 yr, while the maximum observed age was 6 years. Natural mortality given growth parameters and species maturity, was estimated at 1.0 yr-1. The modal decomposition of monthly length distribution, analyzed by a statistical-numerical algorithm (MIX approach) gave similar results to those obtained from otolith readings.

Se estimaron los parámetros de crecimiento (L∞, K, t0) y mortalidad natural (M) de sardina austral (Sprattus fuegensis) en el mar interior de la isla de Chiloé. Esta zona corresponde al límite norte de la distribución de la especie en el Océano Pacifico sur. Se analizó un total de 1.584 otolitos, de ejemplares obtenidos entre julio de 2005 y diciembre de 2006. Un análisis de covarianza descartó diferencias significativas (P = 0,654) en la relación entre el tamaño del otolito y la longitud total entre machos y hembras. Los otolitos mostraron alta proporción mensual del tipo de borde hialino en agosto de 2005 y de julio a octubre de 2006. La formación de la banda hialina desde mediados de invierno hasta primavera, coincidió con la estación reproductiva que se extendió de septiembre a diciembre. Esto sugiere una periodicidad anual en su formación probablemente como una consecuencia de la canalización de la energía hacia la reproducción. Los parámetros de crecimiento fueron: L∞ = 17,71 cm; K = 0,78 año-1; t0 = -0,46 años; mientras que la edad máxima observada fue de 6 años. La mortalidad natural, considerando los parámetros de crecimiento y madurez de la especie, se estimó en 1,0 año-1. La descomposición modal de la distribución de longitudes mensuales, analizadas por medio de un algoritmo estadístico-numérico (enfoque MIX), mostró resultados similares a los obtenidos de las lecturas de otolitos.

La producción agrícola es dinámica y competitiva, y los productores deben ser más eficientes en la utilización de los recursos para obtener mayor rendimiento y mejor calidad al menor costo posible. Por lo anterior, el objetivo del presente trabajo fue realizar una evaluación técnica de programas de fertilización en el cultivo de tabaco Virginia, en los municipios de Campoalegre y Garzón del departamento del Huila. Se evaluaron siete tratamientos correspondientes a seis alternativas de fertilización (tres dosis y dos fuentes de aplicación) y un testigo comercial. Cuando las hojas alcanzaban la madurez de recolección, se cosecharon, se curaron y posteriormente se clasificaron y pesaron para obtener el rendimiento y la calidad por tratamiento. Para el análisis técnico y económico se tuvo en cuenta el rendimiento, costo de la fertilización, ingreso bruto y neto, y calidad de compra. El municipio de Campoalegre presentó mayor rendimiento promedio (3.080 kg ha-1) con respecto a Garzón (2.640 kg ha-1). Para los dos municipios los costos más altos se presentaron en los tratamientos con dosis del 150% de la fertilización y la utilización de sulfato de amonio (SAM). Para Campoalegre, los mayores rendimientos se obtuvieron con la no utilización de SAM a las tres dosis. En Garzón, los mayores rendimientos se obtuvieron con la dosis al 100% con y sin aplicación de SAM y el testigo comercial. La mejor relación beneficio-costo en Campoalegre se obtuvo con la dosis al 50% de la fertilización recomendada sin aplicación de SAM y en Garzón se obtuvo con el testigo.

Agricultural production changes constantly and producers have to be able to use resources more efficiently to obtain a greater yield and improve quality at the lowest possible cost. Consequently, the objective of this paper was to carry out a technical evaluation of the fertilization programs for flue-cured tobacco farming in the municipalities of Campoalegre and Garzon, located in the department of Huila, Colombia. Seven treatments, corresponding to six fertilization alternatives (three dosages and two application sources) and the conventional treatment carried out by producers (the control) were evaluated. When the leaves reached ripeness for harvest, they were harvested, cured and later classified and weighed to measure the yield and the quality obtained from the treatments. For the technical and economic analysis, the yield, fertilization cost, net and gross income, and the purchase quality were taken into account. The municipality of Campoalegre showed a greater average yield (3,080 kg ha-1) over Garzon (2,640 kg ha-1). For both municipalities, the highest costs were experienced with the 150% fertilization treatment and the use of ammonium sulphate (AMS). For Campoalegre, the greatest yield was obtained without the use of ammonium sulphate at all three dosages. In Garzon, the greatest yield was obtained with the 100% dosage with or without the use of AMS and the conventional treatment carried out by the producers. The best cost-benefit ratio in Campoalegre was obtained with the 50% dosage of fertilization recommended without use of AMS and, in Garzon, it was obtained with the conventional treatment.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar (a un nivel exploratorio), algunos de los diferentes diseños de muestreo convencionales en una sección de un cultivo de la papa, y en un cultivo comercial de espinacas. Se realizó un muestreo de malezas en una sección de 16 x 48 m de un cultivo de papa, en red rígida de 192 secciones, en las que se registró la cobertura y la densidad de malezas, en tamaños de cuadro desde 0,25 m², hasta 64 m², con esta información se conformó una base de datos que permitió simular diversos diseños de muestreo como: variables y tamaño de cuadro. Con estos resultados se realizó un segundo muestreo en un cultivo de 1,16 ha de espinaca, en la cual se estableció una red rígida de 6 x 6 m, evaluando la cobertura en cuadros de 4 m². Con esta información se conformó otra base de datos con la cual se simularon otros diseños de muestreo como distribución y cantidad de cuadros muestreados. Según los resultados obtenidos, una buena forma de aproximarse a la cantidad de cuadros para los diversos muestreos es: 10-12 cuadros de 4 m² por ha, para riqueza; 18 o más cuadros para abundancia. Este tamaño de cuadro resulta óptimo, debido a que permite muestrear más área sin perder de vista especies de porte bajo, siendo la cobertura la variable que mejor representa la abundancia de las malezas.

This study aimed to evaluate (at an exploratory level), some of the different conventional sampling designs in a section of a potato crop and in a commercial crop of spinach. Weeds were sampled in a 16 x 48 m section of a potato crop with a set grid of 192 sections. The cover and density of the weeds were registered in squares of from 0.25 to 64 m². The results were used to create a database that allowed for the simulation of different sampling designs: variables and square size. A second sampling was carried out with these results in a spinach crop of 1.16 ha with a set grid of 6 x 6 m cells, evaluating the cover in 4 m² squares. Another database was created with this information, which was used to simulate other sampling designs such as distribution and quantity of sampling squares. According to the obtained results, a good method for approximating the quantity of squares for diverse samples is 10-12 squares (4 m²) for richness per ha and 18 or more squares for abundance per hectare. This square size is optimal since it allows for a sampling of more area without losing sight of low-profile species, with the cover variable best representing the abundance of the weeds.

Daily deposition of otolith increments was validated for juveniles of 8 intertidal fish species in central Chile, Helcogrammoides chilensis, Helcogrammoides cunninghami (Tripterygiidae), Auchenionchus microcirrhis, Auchenionchus crinitus (Labrisomidae), Hypsoblennius sordidus (Blenniidae), Gobiesox marmoratus, Sicyaces sanguineus (Gobiesocidae) and Myxodes viridis (Clinidae). Validation was performed by Alizarin Red-S labelling followed by 6 days of growth.

Somatic growth was studied in the Chilean hake stock off central coast of Chile, through the application of Von Bertalanffy equation (vB) as a non-linear mixed effect model (NLME) on length-at-age-data derived from otolith readings made at Instituto de Fomento Pesquero since 1972. Average growth rates for each year from 1972 to 2009 were estimated. Growth parameters of vB curves were analyzed for three major periods regarding changes in stock biomass (1972-1990, 1991-2003 and 2004-2009). Results indicated that the average growth rate showed inter-annual variations that did not exceed ±15 cm of total length around the historical average of males and females, showing no persistent tendency towards sustained increase or decrease in somatic growth rate. Growth curves obtained with the vB parameters, estimated for the three periods, showed a similar trajectories until age 7 and 8 years, in both male and females. Changes after this age may be a result of a decrease of larger fish removed by the selective effect of fishing, which triggered variations in the fitted curves, but not necessarily changes in somatic growth of these ages in the population. The results demonstrated that the individual growth of hake has not changed significantly since 1972, without observing a density-dependent effect with decreasing abundance.

Se estudió el crecimiento somático del stock de merluza común frente a la costa central de Chile, mediante la aplicación de la ecuación de Von Bertalanffy (vB) con un modelo No-lineal de Efecto Mixto, sobre los datos edad-talla actual proveniente de la lectura de otolitos realizada por el Instituto de Fomento Pesquero desde 1972. Se estimó la tasa de crecimiento promedio para cada año, desde 1972 a 2009 y se analizaron los parámetros y curvas de crecimiento de vB, agrupados en tres periodos, seleccionados en referencia a importantes variaciones en la biomasa del stock, a saber: 1972-1990, 1991-2003 y 2004-2009. Los resultados indicaron que la tasa de crecimiento promedio mostró variaciones interanuales que no superan ± 1,5 cm LT en torno al promedio histórico de machos y hembras, no mostrando una tendencia persistente hacia el aumento o disminución sostenida. Las curvas de crecimiento obtenidas con los parámetros (vB) estimados para los tres periodos indicados, mostraron tanto en hembras como en machos, trayectorias similares hasta los 7 y 8 años de edad, respectivamente. Variaciones posteriores a estas edades se podrían deber a la disminución de los peces de mayor tamaño en la distribución, removidos por el efecto selectivo de la pesca que efectivamente ocasiona variaciones en las curvas ajustadas, pero estas variaciones no son el reflejo de cambios en el crecimiento somático de esas edades en la población. Los resultados permiten concluir que el crecimiento somático de merluza común no ha variado en forma importante desde 1972, los cambios que se observan en peces de mayor edad es probable que obedezcan a causas distintas a la denso-dependencia.

The southern blue whiting, Micromesistius australis (Norman, 1937), is an important demersal resource associated with the slope and continental shelf of southern Chile, Argentina and the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. Recent studies have reported schools of adult fish from Atlantic waters migrating along the southern Chilean coast in mid-winter, moving northwards to spawn in August (47°-51°S), and then returning to Atlantic waters, presumably to feed. The migratory pattern suggests the presence of one or more stock units associated with the South American coast. In the present study, "otolith morphometry" is used to determine the stock structure of M. australis based on applications of basic size descriptors (SDs) (area, perimeter and otolith size), shape indices (SIs) (circularity, squareness, shape factor, roundness, ellipticity), and normalised elliptical Fourier descriptors (NEFDs). Samples were collected during the winter and spring of 2010, during the reproductive period, in the economic zone of southern Chile (36°-57°S), in the Pacific Ocean and around the Falkland Islands economic zone (50°-52°S) in the Atlantic Ocean. Analyses were conducted to include the effects of size, sex and age. A stepwise canonical discriminant analysis showed that fish were successfully discriminated with SDs, SIs and NEFDs. In this analysis, 86.4% and 70.1% of the fish were correctly classified as belonging to the Atlantic and Pacific stocks, respectively. A multivariate analysis of variance showed that the mean values of the NEFDs, SDs, and SIs did not vary significantly between sexes within areas (P > 0.05), but varied significantly between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans (P < 0.05). These results highlighted that otolith shape analysis can be a useful tool to evaluate the potential level of mixing in feeding areas where both stocks, the Pacific and Atlantic units, are expected to co-occur.

La merluza de tres aletas, Micromesistius australis (Norman, 1937), es un importante recurso demersal asociado al talud y plataforma continental en la región sur-austral de Chile, Argentina e islas Malvinas. Estudios recientes han reportado la existencia de cardúmenes de peces adultos procedentes de aguas atlánticas migrando hacia el extremo sur de la costa chilena a mediados de año, desplazándose al norte, en agosto (47°-51°S), para desovar, retornando posteriormente a aguas atlánticas, presumiblemente para alimentarse. El patrón migratorio plantea la presencia de una o más unidades de stock asociadas al cono sur de América. En el presente estudio se utiliza la "morfometría de otolitos" para determinar la estructura del stock, basada en parámetros básicos de tamaño (área, perímetro y tamaño), índices de forma (circularidad, rectangularidad, factor de forma, redondez y elipticidad), y descriptores elípticos de Fourier normalizados (NEFDs). Se analizaron dos zonas geográficas: océanos Pacífico y Atlántico. Las muestras fueron colectadas en primavera e invierno de 2010, durante el período reproductivo en el sur de Chile (36°-57°S), y alrededor de la zona económica exclusiva de las islas Falkland (50°-52°S). El análisis se efectuó considerando el efecto de tamaño, sexo y edad. Se realizó un análisis discriminante canónico tipo inclusión por pasos y se diseñó una función de clasificación, con una discriminación exitosa de 86,4% y 70,1% para los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico, respectivamente. Se realizó un análisis de varianza multivariado (MANOVA), que indicó que los valores medios de NEFDs, SDs y SIs no variaron significativamente entre sexos dentro de las áreas (P > 0,05), pero variaron significativamente entre ambas zonas (P < 0,05). Los resultados mostraron que el análisis de la forma de otolitos puede ser utilizado para evaluar niveles potenciales de mezcla en áreas de alimentación donde concurren ambas unidades de stock.
